This ancestor figure is from the Kambot Village on the Keram river in Madang Provine, Papua New Guinea. The markings may indicate the traditional scarification of initiation, cutting the skin to raise markings resembling the crocodile. The creation myth tells of the people descending from the crocodile and emerging from the river as humans to walk on land.
