Local Artist Kele Hayward has re-created a set of traditional "tatau" tattooing implements, using as reference numerous depictions of these tools. This method requires two hands, one to hold the "comb" and the other to use the tapping stick to cause the skin to be penetrated.  The combs vary in width and a full set might include several larger combs with up to 50 points.
Made from koa wood, carved shell and fiber binding. The set is mounted in a koa wood shadow box.
